Wes,
   I believe you found your problem. I fought this darn things many times on
our 85. Most of the battles consisted of me flushing it with carb cleaner.
You should be able to see right through it at room temp. More importantly,
the hole should slowly close after applying twelve volts to the contraption.
If memory serves me, I was able to adjust the spring, but I wouldn't swear
to it.
