I'd expect that the heater valve has failed (by "operating properly"
I'm guessing you mean that the linkage works).  Maybe precipitated by
opening the system -- I bet a small piece of crud could stick on the
seat/seal and cause a leak.  But they fail all by themselves too.

I personally doubt that reverse hookup would have much effect here,
but Dennis and/or Mark prolly know for sure.
