It's a little premature to jump to a replacement transmission so soon, but I'm having some troubles. (1985 1.9 Vanagon Westfalia with manual trans.) The worst case scenario is that I have my mechanic pull my trans and send it to AA Transaxle. It'll be about four hours labor, plus Daryl's fee for rebuilding. That's a little more than I can afford right now. I imagine most would recommend against putting in a used trans, but what are the chances of getting a "known good" used trans? I'll investigate a little more to see what the specific problem is, but I just want to look ahead if I need a whole new trans.
