For those who prefer an off-the-shelf solution, or just don't want to drill
into their Vanagon, let me plug my $119 Ezy-Awning as an alternative.  Like
Stephen's finished product it is a dome awning, which prevents rain sag.
But it does not require you to drill into or modify your Vanagon in any way.
It simply clamps on when in use and stores under your seat when not.  Since
it's designed specifically for the Vanagon, it's ready to go right out of
the box; no fabrication or modification needed.  Over the years it has
