Subject:Fuel pump replacment frequency?

Should a Bosche FP last more than little over a year? Mine was replaced
last summer, along with the fuel filter, but now I notice I can hear it
whining when before, that was only with a very low tank. It sounds like it
may be on it's way out, again. Or could the filter just be dirty again? I
did run the Van right out of fuel recently, testing where my actual "empty"
is on my whimsical fuel gauge. Perhaps some sludge from the tank's dregs
got into the filter or the pump.
I'm about due to replace the filter anyhow, but should I order an new pump
at the same time? Is it feasible to put some compressed air backwards
through the pump and clean it out some? Is there a second filter anywhere?
  Thanks
  Don Hanson
