I know there are aftermarket 'carputers'; just watch an episode of 'Pimp My Ride', they do it all the time. You can get systems/parts and roll your own, like you might with your desktop: http://www.mini-box.com/site/index.html or you can buy a new VW: http://news.cnet.com/1606-2_3-6052333.html (with all due apologies to Johnny Cash: 'he was found in the wreck with his hand on the touchscreen') I realize that doesn't answer your question about the hard drive, but since you can have bootable thumb drives with your favorite OS and apps on it (including a copy of your desk top...er, desktop)and people have 'hacked' everything from Ipods to cell phones to use as hard drives I'd go out on a limb and say a large flash drive is workable. Thanks people. I guess if HHD's are surviving in lap tops, then if one were to install, say a Mac mini http://tinyurl.com/5c3gpe it might survive. I know it's being done in cars, but given that we likely do more diverse driving than most car owners, I was curious. Does anyone have a computer "permanently" installed in their Vanagon?
