What you're pondering has been done many times and dicussed at great length
in many forums.
  I have personally done it a few times.  I made a template to add
sheetmetal to Type 1 rear engine tin to (mostly) fill the gap in a later
Bay-window body.
  The Mexican bus uses this same configuration, and has both front and rear
engine tin made properly to fill these gaps and use a stock bus engine
compartment seal.

Hi folks, just starting to investigate the idea of putting the simpler Type1
engine into my Bay, and tried to access the Type2 list. I can't get on
there, is it down? Did they move it after the big discussions about hosting?
