What works for me:  switched to Firefox from IE after the big scare; no more pop-ups.  Set it to block all cookies and add web sites to exceptions as needed for access.  Scan with Spybot and Lavasoft on a regular basis.  
Have been using Free AVG for years and have encountered no problems so far.
