The current recommendation for camping in bear country, besides a clean campsite with all food, hygiene items, etc, being kept a couple hundred yards away is........an electric fence.  They make portable units for backpackers to set up around their campsites.  Just think what you could rig up with the extra carrying capacity your van has over a backpack.:<)
