Some years ago on the Situk River near Yakutat, an Alaska  fishing guide
was having a problem with a particular bear getting into camp, taking
the fish, and generally messing things up. He didn't want to kill the
bear, so he sent for a can of engine starting ether, wrapped and tied
bacon around the can and put it in a plastic bag. When that  bear came
around again, the bear was encouraged by the bacon smell, and started to
work on the can. He bit down, punctured the can. and all hell broke
loose. The can erupted spraying the ether in the bears mouth and face
and the bear went nuts. BUT - he never came back.
