Anyone travel through Mexico to South America?

Traveling Mexico,
      What to Look out for,
       Tip's with Fuel, is this a concern?
       Travlers Checks, do these work?
           Cash, ATM's?
            Master Cards and Visa cards should be accepted most anywhere,
even there, right

  Spare parts, what do we travel with
    Belts
    screw drivers, sockets etc...
    Water
    Fuel
    4x4 blocks
    bolts, for suspension. I've lost one of these before 1500 miles from
home.

    What Vanagon parts would you suggest?

Anyone know anything about South Americas and Travel, more specifically the
rain forest?

Just back from a run and was jogging the ideas around in my head, I started
a book, sort of notes to begin travel plans. Something like this takes time,
which I do have.
