For those who were following my slow shiftless drive from Boston to St. John's - the problem turned out to be a bad clutch slave cylinder. Thanks, Paul Arns at Canadian Tire in Mt. Pearl (outside St. John's) for yet more good-spirited care of Matilda! I knew there was a reason why I like Newfoundland... Joy
