In response ot Deke's post I got into my FI manual which I had not
looked at in a good long while. Reviewing it brought to mind a very good
point.

If you drive a Vanagon and don't have this manual - get one. It's both
Godsend and lifesaver rolled into one.This manual very clearly shows how
the system is built and how it works, and with that as a basis, you can
find virtually every fault with the thing when something doesn't want to
work right - or at all. All the checks and tests are there.
