I have one of the cargo trays that mounts on a 2" receiver.
Used it on a couple of long trips, including cross country once.
Note that everything in the back gets grimy and dirty after
first rain. My camping chairs were not pleasant to use, and
didn't clean up well! A completely sealed box carrier would
be better from the dirt perspective.
However, just as other posters suggested, nowdays I just pack
smaller/lighter, and don't even fill all the interior cabinets.

Westy can take a fair amount of weight in the back compared to say a standard front engined car (where both rear overhang is usually longer and springs weaker).
I never had a problem with weight, despite loading up the back with
spare tires and extra Diesel cans.

Would it be legal to put a hitch tray or box in the front?
I have a front bike rack, which sticks out very little, but
I'm not sure if this is legal either.
