Karl,

I don't remember the exact offset but it's at least ET51.  This means
you'd need a fairly thick adapter of around 35 mm for these to work on
a 2WD bus.  8'' wheels also protrude quite a bit from the wheelwells.

There's a sticky thread on Samba "What wheels fit" where I posted a
guide to calculating wheel dimensions for the Vanagon on page 38 or
39.
