Thanks, everybody- general consensus said grounding problem, and grounding
problem it was. The wire definitely showed signs of heat stress, but after
cleaning and moving to a new location.... Bingo!

I hadn't had time to work on the van in a while, and it was very satisfying
to fix what had become a real problem.
