Subject:instrument panel clock

on my '91 Vanagon GL Campmobile works, but the paint behind the numbers
that makes them contrast is worn partially away.  So, I can see the
numbers, even see them change, but cannot read them.  Any help other
than putting in a new clock?  If not, do clocks from other VWs work, or
is this thing vanagon specific?
