I had a similar issue that was solved this way - first I cleaned up
all the old sticky grease and applied better grease on the metal track
on which the mechanism slides. This helped a lot but it would get
stuck in the locked position - I had to use a metal file to smooth out
the metal track as it had developed a "pit" where the slider would get
stuck.

Disassembly isn't that tricky either, thankfully!
