I removed the bolt into the side of the tranny, then used a big ol' crowbar to move the slave cylinder bracket enough to get the starter out. Thanks for the tips. Undo the forward bracket at the front of the slave cylinder bracket, at the bottom - one 13mm hex head bolt into the trans there, That will allow the slave bracket to tilt forward enough. don't undo the bolts that hold the slave cyl. to the bracket, or undo any hydruaic connections. ( though I always like to bleed some fresh brake fluid into the slave cylinder anytime I am working on anything close to it or part of it - done right, it can only help enhance the life of the clutch hydrualics. ) Scott www.turbovans.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karl Wolz" <wolzphoto@Q.COM> To: <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> Sent: Tuesday, January 05, 2010 11:31 AM Subject: Diesel starter removal > Hi all, > > The clutch slave cylinder bracket is over the flange of the starter motor. > Do I need to remove the bracket before I can pull the starter? > > Any other words of wisdom? > > Karl Wolz
