Bernie -- FWIW -- In our '84 we went with a rebuild from GoWesty, they build out a 1.9L core as a 2.2L engine. Not cheap at $3800 -- http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details.php?id=4036&category_id=82&category_parent_id= I've got 25,000 miles on it with no problems. Noticeably more power, still get 21-23 highway with the beast fully loaded. I know some make fun of GoWesty customers who (they seem to think) pay too much for what may be a perception of quality... but I am totally satisfied with this engine. We only drive the Westy on long camping trips so when we're 1000s of miles from home or in a very remote area the extra dough for an engine you have confidence in seems a reasonable price to have paid. This is not to knock other rebuilders or the various conversion options -- you'll find you have many choices depending on your priorities and budget.
