I've had 4 Vanagons (2 manual /  2 auto trans) and 3 marriages/ 2 divorces.
  The 2 previous wives drove the manual ones,  and the current wife won't drive the auto one.  I  drive at work, so I like to share the driving. 
 Go figure............

  Hmmm --- I had the tranny in my 84 Westy switched to an automatic so my wife
  could drive it. And I love the auto tranny. Clearly your mileage varies :-)
