Pump it a few times, hold pedal down, start, pedal sinks a little.

This is normal for a booster check.
with engine off, use up the stored vacuum by applying the brakes 5 times or
so.

holding pedal down, start engine...pedal should sink some.

I doubt it's the rear brake shoes.
