Main characters were played by Yul Brenner (already an established actor) and then Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Horst Buchholz and Brad Dexter. All but Yul Brenner were virtual unknowns before that movie. Horst Buchholtz was known in Europe but was trying to break into movies in the US. Unfortunately he broke his neck during filming of another movie shortly thereafter, returned to Europe and had a good career there and in the US. Brad Dexter had an unremarkable career both before and after "Magnificent Seven". The main 'bad guy' was played by Eli Wallach and he and Robert Vaughn are the only two of the eight main characters in the movie that are still alive.
