Don't even think of an air cooled Vanagon Westy with AC if you are going to be spending any amount of time in death valley...you will most likely kill the engine, even without the AC running....maybe that's why they call it death valley??

 This would be for a Westy of course. (Vanagon) so I'm thinking the later ones with watercooled might be a better basis?? (Just guessing of course)
