Subject:Replacement engine running rich, FILTHY RICH!
From:TJ Hemrick

I've completed my penance to the VW gods when I finished the fuel tank, vent
tank, and fuel line dance sequence. However, I must have had one helluva
faux pas as the engine is running so rich it can't even idle well. I
unplugged the O2 sensor with no change, individually unhooked the FI
connnectors with very little change. The power is absolutely HORRIBLE. It
lopes along and sputters. The tailpipe is coated with a heavy layer of soot
and even the ground has a black spot under the exhaust pipe. A few things:
  1. Their is a heavy (14 gauge) solid bright green wire that comes out of
the harness that I have no open connectors to plug into, I don't see it
after multiple searches in the Bentley. Anyone know what it is and where it
goes?
  2. It's the stock O2 sensor so I have one black wire with a spade fitting
coming out of it along with the two white wire connector. That black wire,
does it go into the white wire with the green tracer, yes? (Not that it
seems to be working too well at this point. Yeah, I should have marked that
connection BEFORE I pulled the engine.
  3. The only things "original" to the van are fuel pump, wiring harness,
and coil. I swapped the complete motor, the ECU, the AFM, Idle Stabilizer,
Fuel Filter, and it has a new Bosch Distributor and Idle Valve.
  4. It's the same darn problem the last motor had (except that one bit the
big one and dumped all it's oil). Makes no sense that two motors and the
both run horribly rich.
  5. I checked the connectors to the distributor (again).
  6. Do you think the triggers in the distributor (for the FI) could make
it run that crappy?
  7. 87 GL Wolfie, 2.1 WBX, Fresh Fuel tank job.

If I don't fix/figure it out soon, I just might have a fire sale with Vito
and Carmine...

Thanks,

TJ
