Pat - the diesel does not have a pump within the fuel tank, only a mechanical pump (1982) in the engine compartment. This pump both pulls the fuel from the tank to the pump, then the pump provides the high pressure for the injectors. A gas pump that provides those same functions sounds correct to me.
