The boots on my shifter rod have been shredded nearly forever.  I
keep 'er lubed and shifting's acceptable- we're not talking Miata,
after all.  An angry PDL and floppy wiper arm are larger concerns
right at the moment. <EG>

  And vendors?  Can't live without 'em.  It ain't just about parts,
either.  If not for their service to the VW community, I'da given it
up, put an F.S. sign on the bus and bought a trailer years back.
