I've suffered both - and a while back did a bushing job  and the floppy
thing straightened right up. Now when I grab the knob - it's right where
it should be and shifting is easy!!!

Given the age of our vehicles - if you haven't done a bushing job since
possession - it's prol'ly time. Things will straighten right up!!
