Yes, the grounds is what I'd not just check first but run another cable AND
a suggestion:
cannabalize a jumper cable set, using one of the 4 gauge wires and run it
directly from
the alternator hot post to the battery + post. The vanagon wires are getting
old and this
will just eliminate charging as a possible problem forever .... well, 20
years anyway.
