My '84 Vanagon is back on the road after automatic transmission failed in March. Transmission outlasted at least two engines and about 20,000 miles on current engine. I have had the van since 1997. I suspect transmission had well over 200,000 miles on it. Rick Sherrod at VDub Central here in Macon found an independent mechanic to rebuild the transmission, and Rick did the rest of the work.
