Subject:Re: Door Speaker Size- Stock

Thanks Matt & Pete,
I just went out and measured my speaker openings, and they are still 4 inches, so luckily the PO didn't cut them larger for the speakers he installed. The ones he used stuck out too far for the window cranks, so when I bought the van the window cranks were laying up front between the seats. To roll the window up/down, you would have to put the crank on, turn it 'til it the speaker, take it off and start over-took about 90 seconds to put the window up or down-who does s*** like this? I searched Samba for window crank extenders but came up with nothing, so I am going to do what I did on my last Westy, gut stock speaker housings and install the small Sony speakers. Thanks again, Jeff

You can easily put 5.25" speakers in the door if you cut the door panel a
little - not the metal, just the interior panel. Since you have manual
windows you can also put a larger speaker lower down in the door too - nice
option to go with a component setup. There are spacers available to make
your hand crank clear the speakers - get those before you rip out speakers
that sound good. I believe I've seen them on thesamba classifieds, use the
search. What Matt says is true about making sure the speakers have a low
profile so they don't hit the dash though. Mine touch the dash and have
caused some slight warping of the door panel; still worth it to me because I
love my Alpine speakers. I've seen some very low profile MB Quarts that
would work great for you.
