Subject:Unfixable 86 Washers, again
From:Scott Daniel - Turbovans

hi all,
OK....need a real electrical genious here.

the symptom/problem is windshield washers do not work.

in the beginning of this mini sage, I
found an original dead washer pump.
put in an aftermarket one ...washers work.
that lasts about a day.

next step...I find when pulling stalk to run washers ....
it will run the sweep or two of the wipers only if the washer pump is
unplugged.
I make a new dedicated ground wire by the washer pump ...and it's fixed ..
washers squirt, wipers sweep like they should during the washer phase.

that lasts about a day.
Back to the same thing ..
I can operate a test light with the washer pump positive wire.
I read 11.90 volts on that wire with stalk pulled.
plug in a washer pump ....and if the ground wire is connected for the pump -
pull stalk, no washer pump and no wiper sweep.
Undo pump ground wire ...you get the wiper sweeps back.

the regular wiper switch positions work just fine.
I have had 3 wiper/washer intermittant relays in it.
and two load reduction relays.
and fuse 20 for washers and license plate wires is good..

although ! ....this might be an ah ha ..
someone put in a "lights on buzzer", it's tied into the license plate
circuit .......

however, that lights on buzzer has been in the van a pretty long time, like
two years, and the washers worked until about two months ago.

i'm going to plug in another wiper switch if I have a handly one ..
though it sure seems like it's working since it will send a signal to sweep
the wipers when pulling the washer stalk....making one think the switch can
supply the signal it's suppossed to..

any thoughts appreciated.
I've spent more time 'fixing' the washers on this van already , than I have
ever working on washers on all other vanagons combined.
Something is weird.

durn thangs.
It's just a blockage or leakage of fluids or electrons ...
just where it the issue.

thanks for ANY suggestions/throughts !
Scott
