John, I have always wondered this myself, way back to splittie days. You seldom got/get a vw bus with the middle seats in place. I think they sit around and get spider-ridden or dog-chewed until finally they are dragged to the curb. At one time you could find them in a lot of junkyard buses, but those are all but extinct now and the ones I know of use the middle seat for a giant sponge for all the oil-leaking pulled mechanical parts piling up inside. I was on the list, years ago, asking for a westy middle seat. I got a reply from a college student near Gainesville Florida who was using one for a sofa in his small apartment but was moving to a furnished place and could not take it with him. He, a rarity among seat owners, could not stand to throw it away but held on to it until I came through with my westy on the way to Orlando. It was free, as middle seats tend to be. I love it on the rare occasions that I use it. Otherwise it sits in the garage, covered so as to not become spider-ridden and dog-chewed.
