re I have also read that in SOME 2.0 engines, (2000-2002 MY IIRC) there can be significant oil consumption. I wonder what role that cooler *may* play in regards to that issue? Not saying VW was wrong in using that part. As you wrote, it does serve a purpose. I can't imagine the "oil cooler/heat exchanger" could have much to do with oil consumption.. usually that would be about piston rings or valve guides/ valve seals etc. they're worth having on there in my opinion. I suspect the affect is perhaps only 10 % or so , over not having one. Obviously it will help the oil warm up a bit sooner.. might keep oil temps more in a steady range, and has to have some cooling affect. Back to back tests under hot conditions, with and without, would be the way to tell if they help with cooling much, My wild guess is perhaps worth 10 degrees F in lower oil temps under hot conditions. ----- Original Message ----- From: "neil n" <musomuso@GMAIL.COM> To: <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> Sent: Friday, September 24, 2010 10:38 AM Subject: Re: Coolant/Oil that oil filter interface.. reasons > On Fri, Sep 24, 2010 at 8:36 AM, Alistair Bell <albell@shaw.ca> wrote: > >> I did actually address your question, the cooler does help. >> >> >> alistair >> >> PS you can even buy bigger versions of cooler, later model Passats, >> and I think even Touareg.
