I have always thought that those plates, when they are used, came with
the pads, depending on the manufacturer and perhaps the type of
vehicle. I don't recall there being any when I last replace the pads
on my '91 GL. Don't recall where I got the pads, one of our on-line
vendors.
I have not had any squealing on a vanagon; I have had it on some
other vehicles. The most important factor may be the composition of
the pads. Are you using the same type as before?

At your local FLAPS you can buy a type of plastic goop (CRC?) that is
applied to the back of the pads to stop squealing. Of course you have
to take the pads out again and allow time for the stuff to dry, etc.

Have fun,
Larry A.

When I replaced the front pads, I noticed the thin metal plates, "noise dampening plates" as they are called in the Bentley (finally got one) were missing. I'm guessing some highly qualified mechanic at a Pep Boys or some other high quality shop decided in the past that they weren't needed and tossed them. Well, my problem is that both before and after my brake job I have an extremely loud and shrill squeal coming from the front brakes. Happens 75% of the time braking when moving forward, and 100% when backing up. It's a head turning, attention getting squeal that is both annoying and embarrassing. I've searched on line vendors (Bus Depot, Van Again, Cip One, Go Westy) and none list the part. Years (maybe 4) ago I needed these for a '75 Westy and found them at the dealer, which I hate to go to but will if I have to. Does anyone know of a source for these? Thanks, Jeff
