VW ceramic fuses (don't use the crappy plastic ones):

White  - 8A
Red    - 16A
Blue   - 25A

didn't work was there were no fuses in the kitchen fuse box.

Duh.

I found some of those torpedo looking fuses but can't tell what value they
are. I have red, white, and blue, so patriotism aside anyone know the
values? Or even what they're called so I can google the values?
