My '81 had a non op gas heater. There was ducting (for fresh air
intake?) running from sheet metal under bench seat. Granted hole is
closer to the passenger side but......

Maybe OP has same? Bonus if crap speakers mounted in bench storage.
Remove a speaker, run duct, maybe even make a control flap.
