I've never been stopped while driving, but once, when I had to bring
my camper back to San Diego on a flatbed, after a catastrophic
failure, the INS agents at the checkpoint on I-8 insisted on checking
closely. They didn't tear everything apart, but they did peer into the
engine compartment.
