No, the steel wheels were all the same 211 601 027 H. The Vanagon used 251 601 151 A all round originally, but you can use the 311 601 151 D on the rears only. Thus, the reason for confusion :) Who knows what the previous owner(s) did with my 84 GL before I came along :) -- Jim Thompson 84 GL 1.9 "Gloria" 84 Westfalia 2.1 "Ole Putt" 72 411 Station Wagon "Pug" 75 914 1.8 "Nancy" Full Timing Since March 1999 oldvolkshome@gmail.com http://www.oldvolkshome.com *********************************** On Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 10:04 AM, <mcneely4@cox.net> wrote: > ---- Old Volks Home <oldvolkshome@GMAIL.COM> wrote: > >> How the woman who sold Joe the earlier style of hubcap got on them the >> front, I'll never know. My 84 GL, when I bought it had "311" Caps in >> the rear and "251" Caps on the front. How's that for confusion for >> the person who would not know? > > So, were front and rear wheels different on these older vans? Does that mean that tire rotation required removing the tires from the wheels and remounting them? Did one have to carry two spares in order to have a wheel to mount front if needed, and one to mount rear if needed? All seems needlessly complicated and a real functional problem. > > mcneely > -- Jim Thompson 84 GL 1.9 "Gloria" 84 Westfalia 2.1 "Ole Putt" 72 411 Station Wagon "Pug" 75 914 1.8 "Nancy" Full Timing Since March 1999 oldvolkshome@gmail.com http://www.oldvolkshome.com ***********************************
