My first Vanagon was purchased from a wrecking yard for $400, and if I
remember correctly it included a salvage title.  It was an '82 diesel with
complete ASI kit (it even came with a Bentley), and the only reason it was
salvaged was the cute little hole in the side of the 1.6L block.  I built up
another engine and then took it to be inspected by the WA state patrol.
They simply looked to ensure that the VIN was correct and that all functions
were in working order.  No biggee, but of course that was a little over 20
years ago.
