Not sure  if all insurance companies do this, but when my car ( non-Vanagon) was "totalled' ( but still very driveable and safe) and got a salvage branded title,  the insurance company said they won't offer  any other type of insurance on it than liability. 

Not sure if this is true for all  ins companies, but that's what Pemco said.
