In the U.S. Sachs has the larger presence and name recognition, but both are OE suppliers to Volkswagen. Volkswagen upgraded the Vanagon clutch design in the middle of the 1989 model year, to a new design that provided 30% more pressure without requiring any more pedal effort. This makes the clutch easier to use and potentially reduces wear. Sachs doesn't offer that version; they just supersede it back to the early style. But LuK does. That is the one I am recommending, and it fits all the way back to 1976. Other than about a $40 price difference - not a lot when you consider the hassle of replacing a clutch - there's no downside. So why wouldn't you use the upgraded design in your Vanagon, if you were replacing the clutch anyway?
