The sounds of the waking campground were starting to filter into my ears, but dream images still wafted across my closed eyes. I just relaxed and luxuriated with the knowledge that I didn't have to move. Slowly, I became aware of a strange tapping sound coming from above. Tap, tap...tap...tap tap tap. Then the hushed voice of my girlfriend from next to me: "Look up." I opened my eyes. The camper top was up the the vent window open - making, it would seem, a perfect perch. On top of the vent was a large bird, it's nails making the tapping sound on the plastic vent. It took only a moment or two to recognize that it was a hawk. It's feathers making beautiful brown and black patterns, a cruel claw projected from the rear of each leg. It's head twisted this way and that as it searched for it's breakfast with round blue-gray eyes. It stayed for several minutes, then it's attention latched on something and off it flew. A really nice way to wake up! Dan L.A., CA '85 Westy Weekender
