Sorry if this is a repost for some, but I didn't see this come through... I'm still stranded with a box of alternators and no charging... :-( It's an '88 Westy, with 1.6TD transplant, otherwise stock, using a 90A alernator, back half from the original Westy unit, and front half from a rebuilt A2 Jetta unit. I suspect there must be an issue in the van wiring, but not sure where to start looking. Thanks! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Shawn Wright <vwdiesels@gmail.com> Date: Sat, Jul 2, 2011 at 1:32 PM Subject: Greek Single Cab + alternator help... To: vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com Here's a photo of a Santorini single cab from our Greece trip in April: (20th anniversary trip! :-) Glad we're not there now... so sad to see Athens in turmoil. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/LahKZ2CbubzuIVNf01dDuLQEsRzwr61wwM5bDI_Vcpg?feat=directlink We've had far too much going on at home to spend much time on the van... after putting her away in January, I seem to have developed alternator troubles when we finally got her out of the garage a few weeks ago. A new battery is dead flat, and the alternator light stays on with engine running, tach sits at 0 until rpms over ~2000, but voltage at battery and alternator indicates no charge, just a bit over 12V. I have lots of spare alternators, so I swapped a new back plate on, and get same results except no tach at all (I think this was a bad back plate). I checked connector at instrument panel - wiggled and alt light went out, but still no charge. I've also tried several voltage regs with no change. Can someone point me to a good guide for testing alternators, or other things to check? ps: It's a 1.6TD transplant, using a Bosch 90A alternator adapted to fit mounting bracket.
