Maybe answering my own question here.  A little more online snooping seems
to show that in fact there is a 'PLY' number still on current production
tires but buried with some other info.  But again, Ply Rating is still an
old (and not very accurate) method of rating bias ply tires that does not
translate well for radials, there fore the Load Range or Load Index numbers.
