Coir! So the "Horsehair" comes from coconuts. India and Sri Lanka supply 90% of the world's supply of coir (good ol' wikipedia). Now, just like Mr McNeely's westy, my other 90 Vanagon is without that foam padding, instead being equipped with the black rubber flooring--- yet it still has that VW smell. did they use it in the headliner insulation maybe? How about the back of that carpet over the engine lid?
