For the '89 (and '84) VW specifies the 1034 bulb. 1157 is a heavier-duty version of the same thing. They're both double-contact bayonet-base bulbs with 32 and 3 candlepower output. Of course they specify (both years) the same bulb for the rear stop/taillight, which is ridiculous since that needs two separate bulbs; I believe the 1073 or 1156 are suitable for stop and the 68 for taillight. Generally speaking any double-contact bayonet-base bulb with 32/3 cp should suffice for the front, any single-contact bayonet-base 32 cp bulb for the stop and any single-contact bayonet-base 3 cp for the taillight. Backup light is same as stoplight. There's been a recent trend for bulb numbers to proliferate, I believe. The taillight bulb will be globe-shaped and smallish; the stop and combined bulbs pearshaped and considerably larger. But you knew that. Yours, David
