I don't think the question was about converting back to an original, and I agree that it's not the right direction. A vanagon with a gas 1.8 or a 1.9 AAZ turbo D is soooo much better. If the current engine is running, keep it!
I think that's also reflected in Scott's comments, which are on the mark.
