I'd be interested in your snow experience. I have the same setup from Daryl and haven't been in any snow yet. Ihave triedsome other traction challengies and posted my story on a samba thread. Hopefully I will get the van out in the snow this winter to put the cherry on top of this awesome upgrade.

Hey Volks,

For youse vanagon geeks waiting w/ baited breath for the continuation of my saga, I will say that all has worked out wel so farl! If you recall, or haven't been following my thread, or wish it would just die or go away, no such luck.

1st thread:
84 Westy w/ 146k miles on it, won't shift into gear w/ engine running. Added brake fluid, which was a tad low, & it still wouldn't shift for 24-36 hours, but finally, The Miracle, & it shifted perfectly after that.

2nd thread:
30-45 days later, detected whinning sound from tranny & some doomsayers said don't drive on my 600 mile trip or R & P could get toasted & cost moi the core charge. Others said go for it.

Went on 700 mile trip, whinning the whole way, but shifted well.
Got back into town w/ a Daryl rebuilt tranny w/ TBD in it (for the required 2WD) waiting at my local Vanagon Repair Shop, Utah Imports, & they installed it w/ the recommended dino gear oil, Kendall
> NS-MP 80/90, that my ole buddy P. Guard recommended, & I immediately drove off on another closer weekend campout.

Tranny has worked well, although the Dino oil is hard to shift thru 1st thing in the am after a cool nite sitting. Might go to a synthetic like Swepco or Lubrication Engineers #99 after the Daryl recommended oil change. But the Kendall is only $4.30 a quart if you can find it!

Got my autopsy back from Daryl today, after I grilled him when I noticed that my full $500 core charge had been refunded into my bank account!
He said R & P was ok, but the tranny had normally worn bearings, so the tranny was rebuildable.

Daryl also forgot to deduct the return $100 shipping core charge to moi, & when I told him I owed him that, said Merry Xmas!

Let's have a shout out to ole Daryl, who isn't on the list much these days!

Now I can't wait for the 1st big snow storm to try out the TBD!

Stay tuned, or not.

YMMV,

Mr. BZ-how bout an oil thread?
