was not always the case, 20 - 30 years ago there were less gates. I once drove from Comox down to Sooke pretty well all on logging roads. Many roads are deactivated now by either old timber bridges not being repaired or else the road itself being trenched (ie big trench and berm across road). But what gets my goat is that dirt bikes and ATVs can still get past gates/trenches. Oh btw, most, if not all, of the logging on the south island is second growth cut. alistair On 2011-10-29, at 6:03 AM, David Vickery wrote: > I was surprised by the lack of access into many of the Vancouver Island areas for remote camping. The roads are definitely geared to logging operations and not recreation as you travel off the main arteries. Some are gated, others skirt around lakes instead of going to them, and logging trucks wip by at 65 miles per hour on gravel roads. Kind of fun making sure you get out of their way. It took us a little longer finding camp spots than expected, but it was all good.
